Then, Alcoa Is ‘Compressed’

Another One

Yesterday, biotech had moving average compression; today, it’s Alcoa.

In this case, we’ll present the monthly chart, showing the long-term picture.

As we’ll see, moving average compression is rare, especially when using the longer time-frames.

In the case of Alcoa (AA), you have to go all the way back to 1978, to find a similar event.

The Big Bubble

Referring to Prechter’s analysis link here, he states that we’re [potentially], in the largest asset bubble since the South Sea, over 300-years ago.

Let’s keep that in mind. Events are happening on such a massive scale; the typical observer may not be aware of the significance and/or the rarity.

Alcoa AA, Monthly

The zoom areas are side-by-side to show the similarity.

Expanding the chart and including the wedge notation, also shows price action at the lower boundary.

It should be noted, AA, is part of the ‘Basic Materials’ sector, with tracking ETF as IYM.

Included in the IYM components, is NEM, and RGLD; this sector is correlated with the miners, GDX, GDXJ.

Positioning

It’s the trader’s discretion as what to do at this point.

Data-Center (lease) Cancellations

One of many to come?

The article at this link says the cancellation move was ‘unexpected’.

Clicking on ‘Artificial Intelligence’, (side-bar) and going back to August of ’23, with this post, then reading though subsequent posts, one can say the ‘cancellation’ was fully expected.

That August ’23, post has the link to Prechter’s analysis; we’re in the largest asset bubble in at least 300 years (not advice, not a recommendation).

All of that brings us to chief cook and bottle washer, Nvidia.

We’ll cut straight to the chase (as of 11:35 a.m., EST).

A Fibonacci projection is overlaid starting from the all-time-high (1/7/25), to the recent lows (2/3/25), back up to test (2/18/25), then reversal, again.

Note how last Friday’s price action printed and closed near the 23.6, Fibonacci projection.

Positioning

Everyone has their own preference and style.

As stated in the ‘About‘ section, this site works to emulate behaviors of the three masters listed.

Nvidia Melt-Down … The Day After

Now that one pillar of the A.I. mania has vaporized, ‘what’s next?’

To begin the search, let’s start with this headline from yesterday:

“No One Was Buying”: An Ominous Post-Mortem Of What Happened Today From Goldman’s Trading Desk, link here.

That may tell us all we need to know.

But of course, it can’t be that simple. We have to make it complicated with ‘experts’ piling on, pontificating about ‘earnings growth’, ‘multiples’ and the like.

However, did any of that play into identifying the SOXX reversal, almost to the day?

Short answer is, no.

So, why would it be a factor in determining the most likely (next) outcome?

With that, let’s take a look at the chart.

Nvidia NVDA, Daily

It’s an aggressive viewpoint; that is, NVDA’s not going to fill the gap and is in the midst of a sustained down-move (not advice, not a recommendation).

If the A.I. bubble, potentially the largest bubble since the South Sea, imploded yesterday, the chart seems like a reasonable viewpoint (definitely not advice, not a recommendation).

Loeb & Focus

Few people talk about Gerald M. Loeb, late Vice Chairman for E.F. Hutton

He’s the one that said to ‘focus’ one’s efforts on the few and rare, real opportunities.

With that said, NVDA and the SOXX are moving now, while other market appears stagnant.

Therefore, the focus is on this sector (not advice, not a recommendation).

The Path, of Bubbles Past

We’re getting very close to the SOXX, trend break discussed in this update.

If that’s the case and there’s a breakdown, the SOXX, joins the list of past manias and market bubbles (not advice, not a recommendation).

Other markets are hovering near all-time highs, giving the (false) impression, all is well.

Updated In Real-Time

Those monitoring this site have watched in real-time, how this market was selected for (short) positioning and when it was selected.

The only thing not discussed, was the management decision to maintain the position through the ‘election’ blip which at this time, has been fully retraced and more.

It’s a failed (up) move.

Nothing gets the Street’s attention more than a failed breakout or breakdown. The opposing side is trapped (not advice, not a recommendation).

Anything Can Happen

As David Weis used to say, ‘anything can happen’.

There has been no trend break, yet.

As of this post (10:50 a.m., EST), the SOXX, is hovering at support, threatening to break lower.

The SOXX, Has Spoken

Anyone Listening?

For the vast majority, the answer is, ‘probably not’.

For the tiny fraction monitoring these updates, we should be getting the uneasy feeling, the (major) pivot downward in the SOXX, may have just started (not advice, not a recommendation).

Painstaking Detail

Over the past several months, presented on this site, the assessment that A.I., ‘artificial intelligence’, is just another mania in a long line of manias, going way back to the South Sea Bubble of the 1700s; reference posts or links here, here, and here.

The trick is, and has been, what to do?

One Man’s Approach

If I had to summarize my approach to the current situation, it would be to model Mr. Partridge (a.k.a. ‘Turkey’) from the book, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator.

That is, get into position, minimize transactions, stay there until the market says otherwise (not advice, not a recommendation).

That’s what’s being done; trade labeled: SOXS-24-20.

Election Reaction Complete

Based on SOXX, price action itself, it’s possible the upward blip from last Tuesday’s events has run its course.

If that’s true, we can get back to the (potential) implosion of the sector (not advice, not a recommendation).

As of this post (11:41 a.m., EST) the SOXX, has retraced nearly every bit of last week’s up-move.

Market reversals tend to occur just before, during, or just after a holiday week.

Is that where we are now?

Semiconductors (SOXX), and it’s chief cook and bottle washer, Artificial Intelligence (NVDA), may have already decided the next direction … down.

It’s just after the open and this is where we are.

“What do you see?”

Marking up the chart, we have a sell-short indicator (not advice, not a recommendation) right along with a hard stop location (as shown).

From yesterday’s update, those that watched the presentation by Robert Prechter Jr., were challenged with the idea, we’re in the largest bubble ever or at least since the 1720s South Sea Bubble (not advice, not a recommendation).

Positioning

In the sidebar, we can already see a short position was opened during last Friday’s session: SOXS-24-15 (not advice, not a recommendation).

Everyone has their own style and for me, I detest ‘chasing’ the market.

I’d rather make several attempts, get stopped out, then enter again, than watch the opportunity take off because I was too afraid to pull the trigger.

It’s only 20-minutes after the open and we can see the SOXX, is down hard.

Nat-Gas is Back

Reversal Action

Price action detailed below, shows upside reversal (not advice, not a recommendation).

It’s been a while since the last update on Nat-Gas, UNG.

Since then, price action sliced through support (shown in the update), posting new lows.

However, over the past week, the character has changed.

Natural Gas, UNG, 3-Day

Today is ‘Day 3’, for the chart’s price bar; tomorrow’s action begins a new ‘3-Day’ bar.

At this juncture, the prior three-day move to new (daily) lows has been negated with today’s action.

If positioning long, the obvious stop level would be the low of the current three day bar at UNG 13.89 (not advice, not a recommendation).

Anything Can Happen

The past two weeks has shown us, in no uncertain terms, that anything can happen.

So, it is with the markets.

Nat-Gas has been bouncing around historical lows for some time; plenty of time to wear out any (remaining) bulls.

SOXX Housekeeping

While under no obligation to discuss open (or closed) trades, as a courtesy, today’s price action forced closure of SOXX short trade; SOXS-24-12

Total profit on the trade, having twelve separate entries and one exit (today) was just over 19%.

We’re potentially at the top of the largest mania in history save the South Sea, expecting things to go in a straight line is (apparently) not realistic. 🙂

The SOXX … Day 55 (+2)

Margin of Error

If you’re upside down in a diving stall, shown here, there’s no margin for error or you’re dead; literally.

The big problem for engineers, it doesn’t work that way in the markets.

Two days after this post, we have a potential reversal in the SOXX (not advice, not a recommendation).

Of course, the engineers have long since left the room as there was an ‘error.’; not getting the (potential) reversal exactly right.

If the AI mania is over, that update two days ago was off by two-days; the biggest bubble in world history … at least since the South Sea Bubble.

So, let’s move on to the chart.

Before we get started, also note, Nvidia has not made a new (all-time) high. This update identified that reversal correctly (so far).

Semiconductors SOXX, Daily

As of 11:05 a.m., EST, the SOXX has posted out-side-down.

When Fibonacci counts get longer, there is more room to be off by a few days.

If this is the reversal for the SOXX, a two-day margin is fully acceptable (not advice, not a recommendation).

SOXX, Hits Downside Target

First of Many?

At this point, market bulls have to be just a little bit nervous.

Is the reversal from Friday, going to hold into next week or was it just a blip on the way to much lower levels?

Can a ‘Once in 300-years mania’, affect us here and now. Is that knowledge useful for day-to-day decisions?

One way to answer is to place that fact in the ‘fundamentals’ category; knowing it’s there but stay absolutely focused on the immediate truth, that is, ‘price action’.

The SOXX, So Far

We can see the SOXX reversed as identified here.

Then it continued lower, formed a trend line, shown here (using inverse SOXS).

Fast forward to now.

The weekly chart (below) shows price action contacted the first Fibonacci projection ‘exactly’ and rebounded.

That ‘rebound’ was Friday’s reversal bar.

We’re at a critical juncture.

Livermore said years ago, ‘surprises tend to come in the direction of trend’.

With that, Google may have just released the first of many AI, and specifically NVDA, market surprises.

That report is the for the mainstream and even it admits, ‘There was a lot of hype’.

When hype is exposed, the market typically exacts its own form of revenge.

That revenge usually falls on the ‘little guy’ who’s left holding the bag, unable to fathom, ‘the experts’ were only in it for the money.

The weekly chart of NVDA from 1/15/99, to present, puts the situation into perspective.

Recall, from a previous post, Prechter indicates, we haven’t been at these extremes in over 300-years.

Positioning

It was a rough day to be short the Semiconductor sector via inverse fund SOXS (not advice, not a recommendation).

However, the position remains intact with Hard Stop unchanged @ 9.42.

In the after-hours (as of 7:03 p.m., EST), inverse fund SOXS continues to edge lower; currently trading @ SOXS 9.78.

The NVDA earnings report is moving ever closer.
