Biotech … Test & Reverse

Pivot Lower

This week, biotech XBI, broke below support and then came back to test.

Today printed a new daily low (and closed lower), indicating the test may be complete.

Short trade: XBI-26-05, opened late in the session with a stop just above the day’s high (not advice not a recommendation).

Downside Breakaway … SOXX

Some Gaps, Never Filled

The day after the SOXX, topped on February 25th, was, this update.

In the case of Nvidia, it never printed or closed above the high reached on that day.

Well, the SOXX never made it back either.

Then, March 3rd, we have what looks like a ‘breakaway’ gap.

There’ve been at least two attempts to close that gap.

One of those attempts, a Wyckoff ‘spring’ set-up, which may have failed (not advice, not a recommendation).

Biotech … Downside Ready

Trading Channel

Biotech is one of those sectors that’s been elusive, hard to pin down.

The last update was in January, link here.

Note: that update identified the exact high (so far), for the sector; shown as ‘Day 1’, in the chart below.

Since then, it’s been what looks like mindless, sideways congestion; until yesterday, and today.

Before getting to the chart, recall there’s a Fed announcement coming up.

That may bring volatility, or it could be much ado about nothing.

Lower, Monday?

Weeks of declining momentum for biotech XBI, may have culminated in an up thrust last Thursday

That push higher, led to Friday’s decline and new daily low (not advice, not a recommendation).

Recall, last time the ‘fundamentals’ were reviewed, seven of the of the top ten in market cap, had no P/E at all.

Uber … in the Channel

False Breakout?

The chart of Uber is similar to biotech XBI, from last year, link here.

Back then, it looked like there was a breakout from a trading channel.

That update said:

“If the trendline is in-effect, meaning the market’s hanging in mid-air in a false breakout, getting back into that trend may result in some dramatic downside action.”

That’s what happened. Biotech collapsed in to the ‘Tariff’ meltdown.

Is that where we are now, with UBER? (not advice, not a recommendation).

Repeating Pattern

The last update on biotech, XBI was here.

Price action went on to post a new high and, in the process, may have completed a repeating pattern set-up:

The indication is subtle.

There’s no doubt we’re at the very edge of the lake as Wyckoff (and Weis) used to call it.

Anatomy of a Reversal

Wyckoff Schematic

An excellent schematic tutorial on Wyckoff, can be found here.

Going to the link, scrolling down to ‘Distribution’, we have a schematic that includes the notation “UTAD”.

UTAD, stands for, Upthrust After Distribution.

The accompanying text for the schematic indicates the distribution has already taken place; UTAD, is essentially a ‘last gasp’ to see if there’s any more demand.

A fascinating question would be, ‘Was the heavy volume associated with this update an indication of distribution?’

Does that mean the subsequent blip higher in this update, was essentially UTAD?

The heavy volume (potential) distribution is noted.

Biotech, Hangs at The Wedge

Waiting for The Fed?

The last update on biotech presented what was thought to be a reversal condition.

The huge downward thrust with volume, was taken as the clue, some large entity or entities (may) have just exited the market.

Well, it’s been seven trading days since then and it looks like we might be at a pivot point (not advice, not a recommendation).

Biotech XBI, Daily

The reversal (Wyckoff up-thrust) was nearly textbook. The only thing absent, was a lower close for that day.

We’re now hovering at the edge.

The Fed announcement is just over an hour away.

Anything can happen.

MACD (magenta arrow) shows momentum has slowed and lines have crossed to the downside.
