Will The SOXX, Unravel?

Right Out of Naso’s Playbook

‘Think like a criminal’, is one piece of advice from trading legend Richie Naso.

He also describes the algorithms as not caring about profit or loss, but ‘liquidity’ and ‘volatility’.

This morning’s session had plenty of both.

Looking at SOXX price action, launching higher on the Fed speech, it’s clear what the algorithms were attempting.

That is, hit the stops hiding at ‘technical areas’, as Naso calls them.

Semiconductors SOXX, Hourly

Price action went to where stops were hiding or where the inexperienced traders panicked.

Under such conditions, what’s the appropriate action?

Sell, or sell short (not advice, not a recommendation).

From this site’s perspective that’s exactly what happened.

Currently short the SOXX, as trade SOXX-25-12, with the stop at (or to be) the session high.

Which One to Pick?

As the last update said, the stop on biotech XBI-25-02, was at the August 18th high. Obviously that position was stopped out.

The question is, why not re-enter again short?

The answer: XBI made new daily highs where the SOXX did not. SOXX did not print above its high set on August 14th.

Therefore, at this juncture, SOXX is posting more relative weakness than XBI.

The market itself directs the trading action.

Revisiting August 1987

One last thought: August 25th, 1987, was the date of the all-time highs back then. 🙂

Fibonacci, ‘Day 89’

Trading legend, Richie Naso says the ‘algorithms control the market’.

He also says, they’re trained to go to technical areas.

Are they also trained to ‘count’?

Or does the count just materialize as a natural outcome of controlling the market?

Three days ago, was this post, showing a probable outcome for the SOXX.

Both time, and distance, were projected; time, as in Fibonacci Day 89, and distance as in Fibonacci projection to the 261.8% level (April 7th, lows).

Semiconductors SOXX, Daily

Yesterday, was ‘Day 89’.

Today’s close was below yesterday’s low and below resistance (upper blue line).

The Fibonacci 261.8% projection was to (approx.) 259.

Yesterday’s high was 255.06, a difference of just 1.54%.

Currently short, as SOXX-25-11; hard stop at the session high (not advice not a recommendation).

Separately, XBI-25-01 was closed as it continued to edge higher. Today is XBI’s own ‘Day 89’ from the April 9th, lows (not advice, not a recommendation).

Biotech’s ‘Algorithmic’ Grind

Day by Day, Inching Higher

It’s been over two months, since this post.

As the chart shows, biotech XBI, has made it all the way back, to the (blue line) resistance area.

However, it has not pushed above that area to create an up-thrust (reversal) condition.

Richie Naso, on Algorithms

Mr. Naso gives us a brief (technical) three-minute detail on why we should expect XBI, to penetrate the resistance area, link here.

He’s describing false moves (Wyckoff springs and up-thrusts) that trap the inexperienced and unsuspecting; it’s what markets do.

Biotech XBI, Daily

Notice the ‘choppy’ action.

It’s as if XBI, is looking for some kind of resolution, like maybe, a false breakout.

There’s no guarantee we’ll get above resistance. If it happens, there’s no guarantee it’s a false breakout.

However, as Naso says, the ‘probability’ of a false breakout, is (in his words) ‘above 80%’ (not advice, not a recommendation).

The Agnico ‘Wedge’

Similar to yesterday’s update, showing a wedge pattern for CRWD, we have another (long term) wedge pattern in Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM).

Focusing on ‘strategy’, when market patterns show up, especially in the longer timeframes, we’ll take notice.

Agnico Eagle Mines AEM, Monthly

Taking eighteen years to form a wedge, suggests that whatever happens to AEM, is likely to happen in a big way (not advice, not a recommendation).

Agnico’s weighted as No. 2, (just barely) in Senior Miners Index (ETF) GDX; No. 1 spot, going to Newmont, NEM.

Newmont is scheduled to release earnings this coming Thursday, after-hours.

Unlike, Agnico, Newmont’s is well off its all-time highs, already posted an up-thrust, now coming back to test.

It could get interesting on Thursday.

CrowdStrike’s … Terminal Wedge

With the ‘all clear’ going out to millions of ‘investors’, what could go wrong?

Looking at it from a strictly Wyckoff, and chart pattern perspective (a la Richie Nasso), probabilities favor a reversal (not advice, not a recommendation).

Price action has entered back into the pattern.

Positioning

No active positions in CRWD … yet.

After yesterday’s trend-break (into the pattern), there’s a possibility for a rally to test.

Other Markets

SOXX short, was re-opened as SOXX-25-04, with stop at yesterday’s high (not advice, not a recommendation).

Wal-Mart short, WMT-25-04, remains active, with stop being moved down to (near) the last session high of 96.91 (not advice, not a recommendation).

Where, Would I Put My Stops?

As former floor trader Richie Naso says, ‘You have to think like a criminal’ (time stamp 10:50).

Using his example, a market-maker executes orders ‘to create liquidity’; where on the chart of biotech XBI (below), would that bundle of ‘order’ liquidity exist?

Biotech XBI, Daily

The purple oval shows where there’s a potential of congregated ‘stops’.

Also note, the MACD cross.

This trigger signal is on the Daily MACD, only as the weekly shows longer term momentum continues lower (not advice, not a recommendation).

At this juncture, XBI has broken out of previous trend channels and so, we have a new construct.

Positioning

Presently, I have no open positions in biotech (not advice, not a recommendation).

Back in the day, I would likely be holding short, placing my stops exactly at the location of the purple oval.

Let’s see if the market searches out my old stop location that if hit, would have taken me out of position (via LABD) right in time for a potential reversal to the downside. 🙂

Newmont Mining … Still In Trouble

Breakout Into Reversal?

Like a movie script, price action will play with your emotions.

As Richie Naso says, that’s what the market’s designed to do.

The miners GDX, GDXJ, launched higher over the past four trading days, giving the impression that, ‘this could be it, the big move’; however, the truth, the price action itself, tells a different story.

Let’s look at one of the big caps in the sector, Newmont.

Newmont Mining NEM, Daily

Newmont has pushed past known resistance (magenta line) straight into the 38.2% retrace area.

When this type of breakout occurs, it’s called Wyckoff ‘Up-Thrust’ position; that is, a potential false breakout.

When we have the largest bubble conditions in market history, there may be no safe place to hide … that could include the miners as well (not advice, not a recommendation).

Gold’s Technical Exhaustion

Divergences, What Happens Next?

Is gold about to blow up?

Blow-up breakout? … No, blow-up breakdown.

As we’ll see in the chart of GLD below, double bearish divergence on the daily.

At time stamp 6:10, here, in the Fed’s own words, rates are not coming down, they’re likely to go higher.

‘We will need to increase the Fed’s funds rates further …’

Not forgetting bonds, may have already reversed, here.

Then, liquidity crunch … yet to appear in full force.

On a daily basis, we have a double bearish MACD divergence coupled with a terminating wedge.

As veteran trader Richie Naso says, ‘It’s all about patterns‘.

Let’s add intrigue, here (time stamp 13:58), finding out what happens in a liquidity crisis, i.e., ‘Sell everything.’

Desperation Inflow, The ‘SPY’

Who’s left To Buy?

The massive, $21-Billion inflow to the S&P tracking fund SPY, may be signaling a historic ‘changing of hands’, indicating bulls are exhausted.

The coming days and weeks will reveal if that was indeed, the top.

Let’s not forget, if we’re rotating lower from here, the highs were posted during a holiday week, just before Christmas.

Markets tend to reverse just before, during, or just after a holiday week. Reference these links for ‘Holiday Turns’.

Bearish Divergences Everywhere

All over the market landscape, we have bearish MACD divergences in multiple timeframes; Monthly, Weekly and Daily … even on some 4-Hour charts.

With that in mind, let’s look at just one example: Netflix.

Netflix NFLX, Weekly

Be reminded, the U.S. consumer is maxed-out; they’re (likely) finished from a continuing spending perspective. Credit card balances at all-time highs.

With food prices pressing upward and availability a problem, one has to think, ‘You can’t eat Netflix’.

We have a ‘double’ bearish divergence. The daily chart (not shown) has a bearish divergence as well.

In addition, last Friday’s price action on the daily was ‘outside-down’, or ‘bearish engulfing candle’.

Premium or Discount

Using veteran trader Richie Naso’s terminology (see last post), is NFLX at a premium or discount?

Is price action set up to reverse or continue higher?

It’s likely we’re about to find out, starting tomorrow.
