Newmont’s Decision … Down

Now, It Gets Interesting

Is it about to become a dumpster fire?

As usual, we have the rabid gold and silver bulls, breathless; ‘This is it!’, ‘This is the big one!’, ‘Dollar collapse, imminent!’

All the while, nobody’s reporting the fact, that ever since ‘The Speck’ was introduced in 2019, and of course, Speck ‘protection‘, gold production has dropped to 2014 levels, and has not recovered (source, Statista).

Is it as simple as ‘supply and demand’? Is the ‘inflation’ narrative, just another ruse?

Even as gold and silver are rising (for now), the mining sector’s GDX, GDXJ, are far below their all-time highs.

As if to put icing on the cake, Newmont, appears to have reversed (not advice, not a recommendation).

Similar to recent biotech analysis, we’re inverting the chart to show the potential.

Note: This ‘inversion’ technique is a psychological exercise covered in one of Dr. Elder’s books (here and here).

It’s a basic fundamental for un-biased analysis.

Back in the day, while publishing on SeekingAlpha (a whole story in itself), users of that site would complain about charts being ‘upside down’. 🙂

Moving on, we have the following:

There’s a lot going on in this chart.

Price action has recoiled off the support (resistance non-inverted) and is now at a point where it may attempt to retrace for a test.

MACD has become successively bullish; now has a crossover signal.

As shown in prior updates here and here, the support level’s in the vicinity of the 23.6%, retrace.

That indicates bullishness on the chart above or weakness on non-inverted (not advice, not a recommendation).

The Bearish Bet on Biotech

‘Monkey See … ‘

The next ‘show’ is about to begin; let’s take our seats, get the popcorn ready.

Setting the stage, we have this, just out.

Looks like there’s another ‘Speck’ on the horizon. You know, ‘The Thing’ as The Maverick of Wall Street, likes to call it.

But we can’t have this crisis go to waste. How about a press release, letting everyone know, we’re about to make (yet) another bundle of cash.

Is that really going to happen, this time around?

To find the answer or the probability, we’ll go to the chart of biotech XBI, and have it tell us the likely outcome.

Biotech XBI, Daily (inverted)

As we’ve being doing previously, here, and here, we’re using the daily but inverting it to show bearish (LABD) potential.

As a reminder, this update, indicated a possible stop for a short position (not advice, not a recommendation).

That location is labeled ‘Stop No. 1‘, on the chart.

Yesterday’s action presented the opportunity to move the stop; it’s labeled as ‘Stop No. 2‘.

Rule of Alternation

This ‘rule’, coming from Robert Prechter Jr., says:

‘What happened last time, is not likely to happen this time.’

That guides us to expect something different.

From the perspective of the analysis above, that ‘different’ is pointing probabilities to the downside (not advice, not a recommendation).

Copper Top

Commodity ‘Blow-Off’

Throughout market history, commodity tops usually end the same way … Boom!

This time around for copper, it appears to be no different.

If we go to the futures chart (link here), it’s self-explanatory.

From the link, select ‘MAX’ on the chart and we see, copper’s pulling back from all-time highs.

As always, it could somehow recover right along with silver (update due later).

However, using proxy Freeport-McMoRan Inc., (FCX), it has already printed an outside down weekly bar after posting a decade-long, new high:

That translates to ‘not good’ for the bulls (not advice, not a recommendation)

Price action appears to be reversing or at least testing the resistance (blue) line; attempting to see if that line has now become support.

Moving in closer, we see the outside down weekly bar that has entered ‘back into the range’; just touching the Resistance/Support area.

If we get even closer and look at the daily, price action’s back in the trading range (bearish) and has also posted a divergent MACD (bearish).

Looking at the charts, we’re at The Danger Point®

Inflation, Deflation, Stagflation … or … ‘X-Flation’

It’s interesting, but then again not, watching so-called experts pretend they have it figured out:

It’s inflation or stagflation or whatever.

How about the possibility of ‘non-of-the-above’?

The past four years have put us into a new construct, a new paradigm.

Before the 1970s, nobody even knew that ‘stagflation’ existed. It had never happened before.

So, what new construct is going to emerge (and be given a name) that has never happened before?

That’s the question.

Biotech ‘Set-Up’ … Sets-Up

Biotech, a set-up whose time has come?

Can we go further to say, a ‘set-up’ within a ‘set-up’?

With the caveat that absolutely anything can happen, let’s look at what may be a competed test on the weekly time frame while at the same time, a completed up-thrust set-up on the daily time frame.

First, the weekly using the inverted chart.

As a reference, here’s the link to the prior weekly chart, discussing the spring ‘test’ set-up.

Moving on to the daily we have the following. Note, the daily has been inverted as well.

From an MACD indicator standpoint, we’re still in bearish territory (bullish on the regular chart).

The entire trade set-up could evaporate.

So, there’s no doubt, we’re at The Danger Point®

From yesterday’s update the market itself has shown its stop level for a short position (not advice, not a recommendation).

Looking at the two charts, it’s possible to see a test of a spring on the larger weekly time frame which may itself have created a spring set-up on the daily timeframe: corresponding to up-thrust test, and up-thrust for non-inverted XBI.

Consider that this is all happening while the broader markets are making new all-time highs.

Biotech … ‘Fills The Gap’

End Of The ‘Test’?

Was this morning’s launch higher in biotech a ‘gut-check’ of the up-thrust (set-up), or just filling the gap left from the April 2nd, move lower?

The Fibonacci 55-Day, count remains intact as it moves from the closing high of February 27th, to the ‘print’ high of the 28th.

As of this post (10:40 a.m., EST), XBI has already retraced back to the top of yesterday’s trading range.

As we look at the chart, it’s important to note today’s early session high was 93.85, the exact closing price of the ‘gap’ created on April 1st, and 2nd.

If this action really is just a test of the larger scale up-thrust (described here), one gets the sense a significant move lower may be at hand (not advice, not a recommendation).

We’re just over an hour into the session and XBI has posted a clean reversal bar for the first hour.

In the event there’s no significant move lower, and the set-up fails, today’s high represents a good stop level for a short position (not advice, not a recommendation).

Biotech … ‘A Sneaky Suspicion’

On Target, On Time

The last update on biotech XBI, ended with this:

“However, it’s just a sneaky suspicion, XBI may try to inch itself past the daily highs of April 9th, and April 11th (not advice, not a recommendation).”

Fast forward to now and here we are.

We’re at Fibonacci 55-Days, from the closing high on February 27th; today’s price action opened the session by penetrating highs of April 9th and April 11th.

Doing so, puts XBI in up-thrust (potential reversal) position.

We can say, XBI is at The Danger Point®

As this post is being created (10:34 a.m., EST) price action appears to be eroding from the early session push higher.

The typical market characteristic for XBI, is to retest in the second hour or so of trading; in this case that would mean a move back to the highs.

If that does not happen, it adds weight to the potential reversal scenario (not advice, not a recommendation).

SOXX Action … Tight & Tighter

Was Today, The ‘Tightest’?

The last update on the SOXX (using inverse SOXS), said we closed out the day, last Friday, with five-hourly bars of tight price action.

Tight action implies a directional, breakout move of some sort; expecting downward, for the SOXX (not advice, not a recommendation).

It didn’t happen.

What we got instead, shown below, is price action that’s even tighter.

Since the last update used the 3X Leveraged Inverse Fund SOXS, we’ll continue with that, but move to a 30-minute timeframe.

The boxes outline price action that has become increasingly more and more constricted.

Obviously, something’s about to happen … but what?

Data Release

Tomorrow’s the release of PPI data along with a couple of Fed speeches.

Not that the ‘data’ really matters. Anyone with two basis points rubbing together should already know about accuracy of ‘the data’.

Even so, it can be used as an excuse for market manipulation.

So, let’s see what happens next.

Deep ‘Kimchi’ Update … Newmont

Setting Up For ‘Breakout’ or, ‘Digging-In’ …?

Gold’s near all-time highs, silver’s rebounded, testing recent highs; yet Newmont’s at a paltry 23.6%, retrace.

So, you tell me. What’s likely to happen to Newmont, if gold or silver head back lower, even just a little bit?

That dude in the picture, needs to keep on diggin’. 🙂

Wyckoff, In-The-Know

Years ago, Wyckoff told us not to pay any attention to the financial press, the local circus.

However, that does not mean he didn’t know what was going on. He did, and sometimes down to the penny.

We don’t know for sure what’s (really) happening with Newmont and the mining sector but among other things, it might have something to do with this, this, and this.

Even so, price action’s the truth; let’s look at our chief cook and bottle washer’s progress since the last update.

Newmont Mining NEM, Weekly

The chart has expanded the Force Index (middle panel) for better clarity.

Going back to the last update, it had this to say:

“A reasonable expectation is NEM, retraces, testing the wide bar and volume before continuing to the downside or moving back higher to a breakout.”

Price action has done exactly that. It came down to test the wide (4/25/24) bar and then back up to resistance, where we are now.

The only thing missing at this point, is the breakout or reversal (not advice, not a recommendation).

Show Me, The Money

Anyone with two Latte’s rubbing together, knows the economy may (already) be in full-blown collapse.

Anecdotal (and factual) evidence of that can be found here, here and here.

Adding, Nemont itself is not doing well as evidenced by this recent (February) article about dividend cuts, asset sales.

Seems like everybody’s looking around for cash.

SOXX From The ‘Short Side’

A Look At Leveraged Inverse: SOXS

Just a reminder, the Inverse Fund trades contacts that rise in value if the tracking fund (in this case, the SOXX) declines in value.

Add to that some 3-X leverage and it’s a potential rocket in either direction.

The last update on the SOXX, link here, said we’re at The Danger Point® and since then, nothing has changed.

At the open today, SOXX posted an attempt to launch higher that was quickly reversed. Price action then spent the rest of the day in a narrow trading range.

So, what happens now?

For a look at the probabilities, we’re going to use the 3X leveraged inverse fund SOXS.

What we’re highlighting here on the hourly, is net distance traveled on the down move (upward in SOXX), getting shorter with each successive thrust.

Add to that, ‘tight’ hourly bars for five-hours of the trading session.

Tight action precedes (typically) some type of directional move or breakout (not advice, not a recommendation).

Obviously, with tight action in the upper half of the day’s trading range, one would expect a directional, breakout move to the upside (downside for SOXX).

SOXX … About To Pivot?

Downside Energy & Acceleration

It’s been three weeks since the SOXX, competed nearly an 18% plunge that started back on March 8th.

Price has action rebounded since then.

However, in the past several days, it has completed an upside test and now (as of 12:05 p.m., EST) is posting a potential reversal to the downside (not advice, not a recommendation).

The 3-Day chart shows us the prior move had the second largest downward thrust energy, ever, for the index.

The last downthrust energy, the largest ever, kicked off a decline lasting from January of 2022, to October the same year.

Moving closer-in on the details we have the following:

Do we have a ‘mini’ Up-Thrust, in the expanded view?
