Silver Top … Part II

More Volume … Less Net Distance

It’s been about a week since the last update on silver and the ‘usual suspects’ are out in force … again.

One of these days … Alice!

I like the metals as much as the next guy, but that doesn’t help when it’s time to stay focused on what the market’s (really) saying.

This week’s volume in SLV, was more than last week by about 16%, but net distance traveled (at the close) was far less … about 74%, less net travel … ruh, roh.

Silver SLV, Tracking ETF, Weekly

There’s a wide price spike for the week but it’s the close, that’s the important part, holding just above resistance.

Obviously, what happens next is important.

Typical market behavior for silver suggests we’re at or near a top and due for some kind of downside move if not a complete reversal (not advice, not a recommendation).

Different This Time

If this time really is different and we’re in the long-awaited hyperinflation move, we’ll probably find out soon.

If that’s the case, meaning, it really is different, one would expect the behavior of the metals to change; like silver holds its current level, moves higher, or starts congesting for another up-wave.

So, let’s see what happens next.

Nat-Gas … The ‘Sleeper’

Any Bulls Left?

It’s all bearish on the Nat-gas front.

Way back in 2001, it was all bearish on the gold front as well; lows were around $254/oz. – $255/oz.

How did that work out?

No, Nat-gas is not gold but at this point, it’s possibly just as ignored as gold was, then.

The strategy or potential reasons for a rally in Nat-gas, have already been addressed here and here.

So, we’ll cut to the chase, looking at the proxy, UNG.

Natural Gas, UNG, Daily

It’s possible, the March 27th, penetration of support (covered here) and subsequent recovery, is a Wyckoff spring set-up (not advice, not a recommendation).

If we’re in a spring with the wedge in-effect, meaning, the market’s not going to morph into another structure, then it’s likely, Friday’s action was a test of both the spring and the wedge (breakout).

Supporting the ‘test’ scenario, we have Friday’s action pulling back to the lows; volume contracts by over 37%, when compared to the day prior, Thursday.

Of course, this is all very nuanced action and can be blown away at the next session.

However, as with our gold example, no one was looking for a major, long-term reversal at the time.

Silver Top?

Know Your Market

There’s been something wrong with the precious metal’s, gold and silver, for years.

Gold and silver used to move essentially in tandem, over the long term; not anymore.

This link shows there’s a huge divergence in the correlation between the two metals. Gold has launched higher, while silver has lagged.

Right around June of 2020, the correlation began to break down. What else was going on (or being ‘rolled out’) around June of 2020?

Recall, silver’s primarily an industrial metal; affected much more (than gold) by manufacturing demand.

Strategy First

Shown by the market itself, direct correlation between silver and gold no longer applies (or has somehow changed into a new construct), silver’s not confirming the ‘inflation’ shtick, possibly influenced more by industrial demand.

Thus, we have the following.

Silver SLV, Weekly

Just listening to what the market’s telling us, it says, when SLV, reaches a top and inflection point (to reverse lower), it tends to print heavy upside volume bar(s).

Looking at the chart, price action’s all over the place. Wide bars, volume spikes, the gamut.

Markets like this are unstable and usually can’t mount a sustained move in either direction.

Typically, if there’s going to be a breakout (or breakdown), price action tends to get tight, or get itself into a ‘coil’.

Even so, we need to account for the market itself.

Having traded silver futures contracts during the last run up and meltdown from 2011 – 2014, the silver market is thin and likes to ‘spike’.

That (spike) behavior is confirmed by Ed Seykota in Market Wizards and David Wies in his (formerly) daily market updates.

We may be at the beginning of a set-up for a Wyckoff up-thrust (above resistance) and then reversal.

A possible measured move for SLV (to be covered in another update), puts the tracking ETF, right around 25.60, about 2-pts. from where we are now (not advice, not a recommendation).

Gold … Breakout or Fake-Out ?

Everybody’s, Been Waiting

How long has it been?

How long have we heard incessant rants, gold and silver hyper-launch is imminent?

Sure, I like gold as much as the next guy. It feels good when you hear the ‘clink’ of real money in your hands.

However, one has to remain unbiased and look at what price action, the market is actually telling us.

Strategy First

Since December 2020, this site has proposed, we’re in a situation similar to Genesis 41; it’s the food supply first, then gold and silver (not advice, not a recommendation).

In this post (two years ago), an observation, ‘stackers’ may be forced to liquidate just to survive.

Now, we have this and this. On that second link, the comments tell the real story:

‘… people are selling their silver because they need cash.’

With that, let’s look at the chart of gold, GLD.

We’ve seen it before, the set-up, The Danger Point®

Let’s add some insight to this picture, hidden in the chart; we have the following:

Look at how much time it’s taken GLD, to go from the bottom of the range to the top; longer each time and with less energy, shown by the decline in (upside) volume.

Longer & Less

Takes longer and less energy.

Still, that does not guarantee anything. Gold cold just keep on grinding higher.

However, probabilities suggest (the chart itself) we may be at or near, a pivot to the downside (not advice, not a recommendation).

Gold Miners … Trap Set?

Is The Fear Exhausted?

It’s a confusing time.

Semiconductors with chief cook and bottle washer Nvidia, seem to be reversing. Other sectors like biotech and mid-caps were never part of the mania.

Add to that, biotech and life insurance may be correlated (more on that, in another update).

As the market looks to pivot lower, bonds are also pivoting lower or at least under pressure.

In response, one can say there’s been sort of a panic into the mining sector GDX, GDXJ; like it’s somehow more safe there.

Let’s see if the miners really are the safe-space.

Junior Miners GDXJ, Daily

As the chart shows (as of 12:35 p.m., EST), we’re pushing into known resistance (blue line) at the 37.00, area.

There’s also a Fibonacci time frame. Today is ‘Day 55’, from the December 22nd high.

Not only are we at Day 55 from the 12/22/23 high, but we’re also at Day 21, from the February 13th, lows.

Essentially, GDXJ is about to post a Wyckoff up-thrust condition, the area for potential downside reversal.

Gold Up … Production Down

New Highs As Supply Contracts

Is it as simple as being stuck between supply and demand?

If so, does that mean gold’s new highs have nothing (or very little) to do with inflation?

Over a year ago, was this post, proposing the following insight for gold (GLD):

“Maybe it’s because of scarcity (along with nearly everything else) that’s causing the increase in price.”

We can see from this link, world-wide production dropped in 2020, and has remained lower.

That is at least, an alternate reason for the increase in price.

Then, Newmont, NEM

Let’s not forget, in the above post was Newmont Mining, forming a ‘terminating wedge’, ready to break lower.

On Friday, January 20, 2023, one day before the update, NEM closed at 53.34.

The following week, three trading days later, NEM posted a high of 55.41, and rolled over; currently down a stiff 35.4%, at 33.91.

Miners In Decline, Why?

Gold’s at new highs, while miners GDX, GDXJ, are in a multi-year decline. Why?

Let’s answer the question with a question.

Why is Boeing (BA) and the airlines in decline? Why has there been one aviation incident after another like here, here and here?

Why are we having investigations like this and this?

Newmont Mining … Still In Trouble

Breakout Into Reversal?

Like a movie script, price action will play with your emotions.

As Richie Naso says, that’s what the market’s designed to do.

The miners GDX, GDXJ, launched higher over the past four trading days, giving the impression that, ‘this could be it, the big move’; however, the truth, the price action itself, tells a different story.

Let’s look at one of the big caps in the sector, Newmont.

Newmont Mining NEM, Daily

Newmont has pushed past known resistance (magenta line) straight into the 38.2% retrace area.

When this type of breakout occurs, it’s called Wyckoff ‘Up-Thrust’ position; that is, a potential false breakout.

When we have the largest bubble conditions in market history, there may be no safe place to hide … that could include the miners as well (not advice, not a recommendation).

Newmont Breaks Lower

But, What About ‘Inflation’ ?

With today’s earnings release, Newmont’s chance at an upside breakout has failed.

Include an earnings miss, dividend cut, and we have probabilities weighted for continued downside (not advice, not a recommendation).

Reading the press releases, one gets the impression, Newmont’s battening down the hatches, preparing for a collapse.

If gold is supposed to launch higher, why all the divestiture, raising cash, paying down debt?

Miners Bear Market

The last update on the miners, link here, had the Juniors testing their trading channel.

Since then, price action drifted higher for one additional day, then reversed to the downside.

That’s where we are now.

To be fair, GDXJ price action has just filled a gap (as of 11:45 a.m., EST). From here, there could be some kind of upside attempt.

However, probabilities are low (not advice, not a recommendation).

Markets Go Berserk

While all eyes are on Nvidia’s (NVDA) last gasp of a delusional mania, the mining sector continues lower.

It’s quietly telling us there’s something wrong with the ‘inflation’ narrative (not advice, not a recommendation).

D.R. Horton ‘Rolls Over’

When Real Estate Goes …

It’s been said, ‘when real estate goes, everything goes’.

Like a slow-motion train wreck, since late January, this site’s been watching the (potential) topping activity of D.R. Horton, DHI.

Now, DHI is reversing; coincident with the housing starts collapse, link here.

We’re right at the top of the ‘terminating wedge’.

Downside penetration and test will provide confirmation of the reversal (not advice, not a recommendation).

The major market indices appear to be topping out as well.

The SOXX, may have reversed. Trading was ‘outside-down’ during yesterday’s session.

The SPY, and QQQ, also posted outside-down.

The potential Nvidia, NVDA reversal (link here) shows that so far, that high has not been exceeded.

Rates Up, Not Down

Adding gasoline to the fire, part of this site’s strategy is rates are going higher, not lower (not advice, not a recommendation).

So far, we see that’s true with long bonds (TLT) reversing to the downside, yet again.

And Then … Gold

Let’s not leave out the latest bullish report on gold (and silver), link here.

Notice the bias … that silver’s cheap relative to gold.

How about the massive, multi-year, ‘non-confirmation‘ between gold and the other monetary metals.

If it was real 1980s style inflation, everything would be moving up in tandem … which it is not; something else is going on.

Is the mining sector, GDX, GDXJ, anticipating a price decline in gold?

Miners Test The ‘Implosion’

Coming Back To Resistance

Less than seven trading hours after this update, the miners (GDXJ) imploded:

Price action collapsed -6.41%, in a single day.

Now, it’s early in the session (10:57 a.m., EST) and the Juniors have come back up to test that breakdown.

Junior Miners GDXJ, Daily

Along with the upside test, we have a trading channel that’s clearly defined.

Even as this post is being created, price action is pulling back from the test, adding confirmation to the channel.

Typical short trading vehicles for the miners are DUST and JDST for Seniors and Juniors respectively (not advice, not a recommendation).
